South Devon Farm Shops and Farmers Markets to visit

A holiday to South Devon isn’t complete without a trip to a farm shop or farmer’s market to pick up some local produce. Famed for its farming heritage and award-winning food and drink producers,South Devon has some of the best produce on offer. From creamy, tangy cheeses, smoked fish and cured meats to seasonal fruit and veg, visitors to the area are spoilt for choice with the foodie treats on offer. Our guests relish the chance to wander around farm shops and markets buying fresh, local produce to enjoy back at their holiday homes and might even pick up a few flavoursome delights to take back home.

We’ve put together a tasty guide of our favourite local farm shops and markets that you can visit on your stay with Saltwater Escapes here in South Devon.

Ullacombe Farm Café and Shop, Bovey Tracey

It’s hard to believe that this bustling, family run farm shop on the edge of Dartmoor started out as an honesty box selling fresh eggs! Now you’ll find a thriving site, especially popular with families, as children can enjoy lovely outdoor & indoor play areas as well as visit the mischievous farm animals. Brimming with local produce, including the farm’s own award-winning jams and marmalades, you can pick up a plethora of produce here. The onsite, award-winning butchers, Cox and Laflin provide the best in locally sourced meat from Devon farmers and the café boasts a menu full of delicious local food. Look out for special events on their social media pages as they often host exciting activities, and their seasonal door decorations are simply stunning.

Darts Farm, Topsham

With a food hall filled with produce from local artisan suppliers, a master butchers, fish shed,

delicatessen, restaurant, drinks cellar and tasting bar and a selection of independent boutiques,

Darts Farm has something for everyone. From humble beginnings as a farm shop hut 50 years ago, Darts Farm has evolved into a unique lifestyle shopping destination with a working farm still at its heart. Recently awarded the title ‘Large farm shop of the year’ it is the place to go for beautifully crafted, luxury gifts to take home for loved ones. Complete your visit and reconnect with nature by getting outside and saying hello to the animals, going on a farm walk and even bird spotting in the hide overlooking the wetland nature reserve.

Totnes Good Food Market, Totnes

Every third Sunday of the month the Civic Square in the heart of the historic town of Totnes comes alive with the sights, sounds and smells of freshly cooked food and local farm produce. Over 60 food traders travel from all over South Devon bringing with them some of the very best food the region offers. You can expect to find an abundance of organic and wholesome produce including local cheeses, freshly grown vegetables and crusty loaves. The only trouble you’ll have is trying to decide which food stall you’ll be eating from as the aromas from each one is as enticing as the next.

Ben’s Farm Shop, Totnes, Yealmpton, Staverton and Exeter

Originally named Riverford Farm Shops, Ben’s Farm Shops strive to bring back the taste and quality of fresh, unadulterated, high quality, traditional farm food. In 1983 Ben started making sausages and bacon from the pigs at his family’s farm and in 1986 his brother Guy started a vegetable growing business, later followed by the veg box home delivery scheme and have never looked back. You’ll find a few shops in South Devon boasting excellent butchers’ counters, organic fruit and veg, dairy produce, fresh bakes and store cupboard essentials. There are also deli counters to pick up pasties, pies and pastries for picnics, and a busy café too. Ben’s Wine & Tapas on Totnes High Street is also well worth a visit for those who love a tipple and is run by Ben’s son Harry, so it certainly is a family affair!

Churston Traditional Farm Shop, Nr Brixham

More than half of the produce sold here is sourced from within the South Hams, an area that boasts some of the most fertile farmland in the UK. You’ll find a deli counter with a range of foods from pastries to pastrami, fresh bread, preserves, drinks and frozen ready meals to take home for dinner. There’s also a café serving delicious food, a covered park for the children to play in and a garden centre. Churston Farm Shop offers a special service for guests holidaying where you can place a food hamper order which will be made up to your specifications and delivered to your door once you arrive – what could be handier!

Stokeley Farm Shop, Kingsbridge

This charming shop has everything you would expect from a country farm shop including a deli,

Durrant’s butchers, café and plant centre. But it also sells a selection of everyday groceries meaning you can stock up on your holiday essentials, including beer from their very own brewery! Situated just a mile from the popular beach of Slapton Sands it is the perfect place to stop for a cup and tea and slice of cake on the way back to your holiday home. You can also pre-order your holiday essentials and have them delivered direct to your door by the Stokeley e-van.

Dartmouth Farmer’s Market, Dartmouth

Each 2 nd Saturday of the month the old market square in Dartmouth provides the venue for one of the South Hams’ oldest farmer’s markets. Dating back to 1828 when local farmers would arrive daily with their laden ponies at this pannier market to sell their eggs, poultry and fresh produce, times have certainly changed. Today you will still find fresh, local farm produce but also freshly baked artisan cakes, breads and pastries, edible flowers and herbs, Dartmoor honey and even handcrafted gin to name but a few delights on offer.

Occombe Farm Shop, Paignton

Packed with locally sourced produce from across Devon and the West Country you’ll find a wide

selection from the region’s finest producers of food, drink and gifts. Fresh milk from a dispenser,

wholefoods by weight and a fantastic range of products grown and produced locally are on offer and a concerted effort has been made to minimise single use plastics with the incorporation of refillables and recycling. As well as the shop you will also be able to sample homemade food in the café, your children can play in the indoor or outdoor play areas, meet the farm animals, or go on a paddock trail. Proceeds from your visit supports the conservation work of Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust helping to take care of the area’s treasured green spaces and securing their future for local wildlife.

Kingsbridge Farmer’s Market, Kingsbridge

An array of local food and crafts can be found in Kingsbridge Town Square on the first and third

Saturdays of the month. Running for over 20 years, this popular event is held under gazebos so it can continue come rain or shine. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are on offer alongside freshly baked breads and cakes, local cheeses, chillies, chocolates and hampers filled to the brim with local treats. Local livestock farmers also bring their meat which includes some more exotic delicacies such as ostrich and buffalo.
