Winter on the South Devon Coast: Where Quiet Paths Meet Big Skies

When the summer crowds drift away and the coastline exhales, South Devon reveals a quieter, more intimate beauty. Winter is when our corner of the world truly shines crisp sea air, empty beaches, migrating wildlife and winding coastal paths that feel like they were made just for you.

At Saltwater Escapes, many of our guests say their favourite stays are outside peak season. With cosy holiday homes, dog-friendly walks on the doorstep and some of the South West’s most scenic trails nearby, winter is the perfect time to slow down and explore.

Here are some of South Devon’s best hidden gems for peaceful winter walking.

The South West Coast Path: All the Views, None of the Crowds

Distance: ~2 miles return.
Time: 1–1.5 hours.
Terrain: Cliff paths, some gentle hills, mostly well-surfaced.
Good for: Couples, confident walkers, dogs on leads.

The South West Coast Path winds its way along dramatic cliffs, hidden coves and wide-open beaches and in winter, it’s wonderfully quiet. You’ll often find yourself with nothing but seabirds and crashing waves for company.

The stretch between Brixham and Berry Head is especially beautiful on a crisp winter morning, with panoramic views across the English Channel and plenty of benches to stop and watch the world go by. Keep an eye out for dolphins, seals and wintering seabirds, which are often easier to spot this time of year.

Dogs will love it too, many beaches that are restricted in summer welcome four-legged explorers in winter.

The Agatha Christie Mile, Torquay

Distance: 1 mile (linear, but easy to loop back).
Time: 45 minutes–1 hour (longer with stops).
Terrain: Flat, paved promenade.
Good for: Families, buggies, wheelchairs, relaxed strolling.

For a literary-themed seaside stroll with gentle terrain and plenty to see, the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay is perfect for a peaceful winter wander. This self-guided heritage trail traces roughly a mile along Torquay’s palm-lined seafront. Linking historic hotels, gardens and seaside spots associated with Agatha Christie’s life and works.

Beginning near iconic spots such as the Grand Hotel and Imperial Hotel, you’ll pass Torre Abbey gardens, Princess Pier and Princess Gardens, and Beacon Cove, where Christie spent time as a young swimmer. Each location is marked with a plaque that tells a little story, a charming way for families, couples and Christie fans alike to explore the coast on foot.

This walk is flat and accessible, great for a relaxed morning or afternoon of exploration, with cafés and harbour views to enjoy along the way.

Berry Head Nature Reserve

Distance: 1–2 miles depending on route.
Time: 1–1.5 hours.
Terrain: Clifftop paths, grassy trails.
Good for: Wildlife lovers, walkers, older children.

For wildlife lovers, Berry Head is unmissable. This rugged headland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to guillemots, fulmars, peregrine falcons and even rare horseshoe bats.

In winter, the reserve feels wild and peaceful, and the cliff-top paths offer some of the most spectacular sea views in Devon, perfect for photography or a bracing coastal walk.

Brixham Mural Trail

Distance: ~1 mile.
Time: 45 minutes–1 hour.
Terrain: Town pavements and gentle slopes.
Good for: Families, rainy days, relaxed explorers.

For something a little different, the Brixham Mural Trail adds colour and creativity to a winter wander. Follow the trail through the harbour town to discover vibrant street art telling stories of local life, fishing heritage and coastal culture.

It’s a brilliant way to explore at a relaxed pace and is ideal for families, as there’s always something new to spot around the next corner.

Dartmoor: Wild, Open & Beautiful

Distance: From 1 mile strolls to 6+ mile hikes.
Time: 30 minutes to several hours.
Terrain: Moorland, woodland, uneven paths.
Good for: Adventurers, families (short routes), dogs.

Just a short drive from the coast, Dartmoor National Park offers a completely different kind of winter magic. Wide open moorland, ancient stone circles, winding rivers and misty tors make every walk feel like an adventure.

Popular spots like Haytor, Widecombe-in-the-Moor and Bellever Forest are especially stunning after a frost or light snowfall and far quieter than in summer. There are routes for all abilities, from short woodland strolls to longer hikes across the open moor.

Empty Beaches & Coastal Freedom

Distance: Flexible – walk as far as you like.
Time: 30 minutes to 2+ hours.
Terrain: Shingle or sand.
Good for: Dogs, families, peaceful wanders.

One of the biggest joys of winter in South Devon is the beaches. Blackpool Sands, Broadsands, Elberry Cove and Slapton Sands become wonderfully peaceful. Perfect for long walks, beachcombing and letting the dog run free.

Wrap up warm, bring a flask of something hot, and enjoy having the shoreline almost entirely to yourself.
