Description

In association with Trinity House, we are pleased to present Warden at Bull Point Lighthouse, North Devon.

Since its original construction in 1879, Bull Point Lighthouse has been guiding vessels to safely navigate this dramatic headland. 93 incident free years passed, with the help of the lighthouse keepers who lived here, before the Principle Keeper reported ground movement in 1972, resulting in 15 metres of cliff face falling away into the sea and the partial collapse of the engine and fog station. The replacement lighthouse seen today has been constructed using much of the original equipment, but now automated and controlled remotely from Harwich in Essex, Trinity House's Planning Centre. Bad news for the lighthouse keepers, however very good news for the rest of us, as all four cottages have been refurbished for the comforts of the 21st century explorer; complete with luxurious mattresses, bedding and towels, well-equipped kitchens, and comfy sitting rooms.

The sympathetic restoration process has ensured the ambience of the original dwelling remains, with no bells and whistles, but all the creature comforts needed for an authentic headland stay experience. Ear plugs are not required as the fog horn was discontinued in 1988, however pack a pair of binoculars and enjoy watching the many fishing boats braving the Bristol Channel for the day's catch.

The nearby village of Mortehoe is pretty village with good pubs and restaurants, a fish and chip shop, stores and a delicatessen; and very easy to reach on foot from Bull Point. For a larger variety of shops and restaurants, and of course, the Blue Flag sandy beach, walkers can easily reach the popular village of Woolacombe (1.2 miles) via the South West Coast Path in around 30 minutes. Or enjoy the slightly more challenging circular walk from Woolacombe to Putsborough Sands (approx 4 miles), the views are unforgettable and you might spot a few seals! The historic seaside town of Ilfracombe is just under 6 miles away and boasts the largest harbour on the North Devon Coast and is overlooked by Damien Hirst's stunning 66ft tall sculpture of Verity. Ilfracombe also enjoys pretty beaches and local eateries, along with opportunities to visit Lundy Island by boat trip.

Warden provides generous single-storey accommodation for a one-bedroom property, with a sitting room and separate dining room, fully equipped kitchen including the all-important wine fridge, a good sized bedroom and a spacious bathroom with a large separate walk-in shower in addition to the bath. Outside, a small private sitting area outside the entrance houses a small wooden 'companion twin seat' and guests also have use of the shared communal grassed area in front of the cottages.

There are four former lighthouse keeper's cottage at Bull Point Lighthouse, Warden is the smallest (sleeping two guests and welcoming one dog), shown on the left hand side of the row of the three sea-facing cottages (as you face them); with Triton in the middle (sleeping four guests in three bedrooms and welcoming two dogs); and Siren on the right hand side (sleeping five guests in three bedrooms and pet free); Sherrin is the largest, and a detached property located behind these three, close to the lighthouse itself, and also sleeps five guests in three bedrooms, welcoming two dogs.

Additional Information:
One well-behaved dog welcome (small additional charge).
Travel cot and highchair available on request.
This lighthouse does not have a fog signal.
Sorry, no WiFi.
The perimeter of the site is fully fenced and gated but once outside this area, it is very dangerous for children staying at the holiday cottage. Please ensure children are supervised at all times.
Very limited mobile signal. A landline telephone is provided for UK and non-premium numbers only.
Guests are reminded they are renting a heritage building, therefore certain features such as steps, stairs and floor levels may not comply with that of a modern building. As such, we would advise guests to acquaint themselves with the premises on arrival and exercise caution accordingly.
Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.
Access roads to the lighthouse site are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.
A barbecue is not provided, however guests are welcome to bring their own, subject to adhering to the safety precautions set out in the arrival information.
Sorry, no fireworks, drones or remote controlled flying equipment are permitted.
Please be advised, there is no facility for charging an electric car at this property and charging of an electric car is not permitted.

Location

Information correct at time of writing.

The stunning beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde, and Saunton Sands are all exceptional.

Approximately 25 minutes drive away is one of the finest beaches in the South West - Putsborough Sands, the sandy beach has been voted as one of the best beaches in the UK, Europe and the World, and won numerous accolades and a certificate of excellence.

Morte Point and Bull Point offer opportunities for a wonderful circular coastal walk - once notorious for smugglers and wreckers, this stretch of the coastline is a great place to enjoy the dramatic scenery of rocky headlands, coves and sandy bays. If you are lucky you may spot seals on your walk, and you can enjoy the coastal heathland and grasslands.

The large village of Braunton is close by and has a good selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Braunton is famous for the stretch of sand dunes known as the Braunton Burrows.

Barnstaple is around half an hour away, and the River Taw's lowest crossing point before the Bristol Channel. It is well worth a visit for its picturesque estuary views, and has plenty of historical attractions.

Just over 10 minutes away is the popular seaside resort of Ilfracombe with its harbour, which is overlooked by Damien Hirst's stunning 66ft tall sculpture of Verity. Aside from the beach, Ilfracombe is full of family friendly attractions and activities from the Aquarium in the harbour to Watermouth Castle and theme park, which combines the remains of a Victorian era castle with a theme park and gorgeous landscaped gardens.

Further along the North Devon coast are the delights of Coombe Martin, Lynton and Lynmouth, and the stunning Valley of the Rocks, you are spoilt for choice with coast paths and coves aplenty to explore.

Exmoor National Park is a pleasant short drive away, and has a unique landscape of moorland, woodland, valleys and farmland, where high cliffs plunge into the Bristol Channel. You will find cosy pubs and tearooms offering their delicious produce, so a day trip exploring this special area is highly recommended.

Our visit to Warden was 17th November - 21st November... We had a wonderful time.. The property was spotless.. Bed linen.. Towels.. Beautiful... The welcome pack was much appreciated... A lot of thought had gone into making our stay so enjoyable... However. One problem with faulty padlock on gate... This was resolved by Tracey & her team within 30 minutes... Considering the remoteness of the property.. We felt that this was dealt with very efficiently & promptly. 🙂 We would gladly recommend this to anyone.... Thank you Julie & Martin.

It was a real joy to stay at the Warden at Bull Point Lighthouse and we enjoyed our stay immensely. From the beginning of our search for a holiday at a lighthouse cottage, my husband previously being a lighthouse keeper, we were impressed with the efficiency, friendliness and helpfulness of Rural Retreats with whom we booked. Lisa, the housekeeper, was also very thoughtful and helpful, providing us with all the relevant information. Situated in a wonderful, peaceful position at the lighthouse, we thoroughly relaxed in the beautiful and glorious surroundings. The cottage was spotless, beautifully decorated and tastefully furnished. Everything we needed was provided. We can thoroughly recommend this cottage for an amazing and restful holiday.

Mrs D - Dear Richard and Lynda, We have had an absolutely perfect couple of days and more! From the moment our journey down the lane began, the "wow" factors have been in abundance & many down to you both going that "extra mile". From the tea tray being set up, the beautiful fresh flowers wine and thoughtful card, the heating, fire and the beautifully decorated Christmas tree all lit up in the corner of the room. Yesterday at 4pm as we reached the top of the hill after a little rain, the sun came out, the sky turned blue and the most amazing rainbow appeared. The exact time we got married 25 years ago. We then watched the sun set scene couldn't have been more perfect & we feel so lucky to have had that "special moment". Came back to a bottle of champagne as we watched the effects the lights of the lighthouse had in the sky & across the water. Oh how we made the right decision to celebrate our Silver wedding day here. Thank you both so very much for the part you played, very much appreciated. S & B

A super cottage, very spacious for two and up to usual high Rural Retreats standards. Prepared so well for our arrival by Richard the caretaker. Great location for walking and Mortehoe a lovely little village with useful facilities just a mile away. A shame that for the moment access to the local beach, 15 minutes along the cliff, is closed due to the winter storms but still a great spot. PM, Hampshire
